We have the most common plate number, ar500, on the state’s license plate list.
But we don’t know what is behind the plate.
We found out this week, in the midst of an investigation by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, that a different plate number was in use.
It turns out that the state Department of Motor Vehicles had used a different number, and it was a misprint.
What we learned in the wake of this revelation is that there is a significant amount of confusion about the state of Massachusetts license plate numbering system.
As we learned through the investigation, a new plate number (AR500) was added to the state license plate system in late July.
The new plate numbers were:1.

Department TRANSPORTS & TRANSPONSI8/5/09 – The Mass Department of Health and the Mass DOT have now confirmed that a new, non-Massachusetts licenseplate number, AR500, was used.
This is not the first time the state has used the non-massachusetts plate number.
In 2010, Massachusetts had been using the non massachusetts plate, AR550, on license plates that had a Massachusetts license number on them.
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management issued a press release on Thursday announcing that it had removed the Mass plate from the license plate database and issued the following statement:Massachusetts DMV has received notification that an expired Massachusetts licenseplate has been used on some Massachusetts license plates.
The DMV has asked for the public’s assistance in tracking the owner of the expired license plate.
The plate number is AR500 and
