The Illinois Department of Transportation said on Tuesday that bulletproof plates are a potential safety hazard for some drivers.
The department’s announcement comes after it said a handful of plates are displaying a security warning and have been reported to the state Department of Public Safety.
State officials said the plate frames are a safety hazard because they can be placed on a vehicle without an operator’s permission.
The plates can be easily mistaken for a license plate.
Some of the plates in question have been found to display the state’s logo on the back.
It’s unclear what state officials think of the warnings.
The department has issued an advisory to motorists warning that a plate with the word “bullet proof” could be mistaken for an Illinois license plates.
